Week 7 – Kortpad deur die Vrystaat

“Kortpad deur die Vrystaat”

There’s nothing like the long road ahead of you – kilometre after kilometre of flat farmland and time and space to think. Except if you have to dodge trucks on the N1… So, we decided to take a shortcut through the Free State this year on our way down to the coast. We even drove some dirtroad due to Google maps’ recommendation of the shortest road.

Well, it turned out that the shortest road was indeed the prettiest and I really enjoyed driving through the Free State. As a little girl we always went to my grandmother’s farm just outside Edenburg and there I learned to love the Free State with its wind pumps and farm dams, neverending maize fields and unique bloekom trees. And don’t forget the sheep standing in clumps around the only green grass for miles.

I used the Garageband app on my iPad again to put down a quick demo for the song. I really enjoyed the simplicity of the app and used drum, guitar and bass loops. It was super easy to create song sections that I could repeat. For vocals I used only the iPad built-in microphone and added some reverb. I think it came out quite nice for a quick recording. You can of course add one of those microphones you can connect directly with your iPad for better vocal recording (mmm, idea for my Christmas list…). But if your car is packed to the roof with holiday stuff it’s really nice to have a recording setup that is as big as a book.

Hope you’re having a great holiday, especially if you’re taking a shortcut through the Free State.
